For any who wish to familiarise themselves with the complexity and variety of Tolkien's languages, there is no better guide than that written by Tolkien himself. A master of language and a man who was very much in love with the sound and flavour of language, Tolkien wrote extensively in the appendix to his great work which built some of the framework to the linguistic work which helped enable Peter Jackson's dream and production. Sixteen months in New Zealand, working on this production with Peter Jackson, creating the dialects and the languages with actors including Ian Holm; Ian McKellen; Christopher Lee; Cate Blanchett; Elijah Wood; Sean Astin; Dominic Monaghan; Billy Boyd; Liv Tyler; Orlando Bloom; Sean Bean; Viggo Mortensen and many, many others was an extraordinary experience. The work was the biggest dialect and language challenge ever offered in the cinema and Andrew, assisted by Róisín Carty, rose to that challenge.
